The Truth About Cooling Mattresses

"Cooling" has become one of the most overused—and underdelivered—claims in the mattress world. Gel beads, ice yarns, and graphene threads are mostly marketing smoke without meaningful performance. Real cooling isn't about gimmicks, it's about science: airflow (how well heat can escape), breathability (whether materials allow moisture and heat to pass through), and material responsiveness (the ability of foams to react to temperature changes without retaining heat). You can't just slap a cooling gel on top of heat-trapping foam and expect results. Many brands use lower-cost memory foams that trap your heat by 3AM. What matters is the full build: top to bottom, airflow has to be part of the equation. Look for zoned coil systems that allow 70% more airflow through the mattress body.
